New Coder's Heaven: Halo not yet included

Developers' Paradise used to be a large resource site with a slight organizational flaw. With a new design, the site is now better than ever.

When a website tries to be many things to many people, it rarely succeeds. The redesigned Programmers' Heaven, a favorite of mine, with its wealth of source code and technical articles in almost every language imaginable, definitely comes close.Figure Aprovides a summary overview of the website.

Developers' Paradise is best described as a warehouse for links. The site rarely hosts original content, but instead offers value by collecting links to code and articles and sorting them into categories. With links to over 17,837 code examples and interesting articles for niche and mainstream developers, Programmers' Heaven has a very large link library. The size of the library isn't the only differentiator: It also hosts a number of active message boards and has a bimonthly email newsletter.

A clean new look
The site was pre-organized hierarchically, which might lead you to believe that there is a lot less content than there really was. You would have to drill down three or more pages to find the first relevant article, and each page looked no different than the last. It was easy to get lost or just not be able to find what you were looking for.

That was my only real issue with Developers Paradise, and thankfully the redesigned site has a leaner hierarchy. If you search for a language category, you'll get a list of subcategories, clearly denoted by small folder icons. This makes finding where you are in the massive library much easier.

And while it's not exactly a new feature, I neglected to mention the site's context-sensitive newsfeeds in my original review. Each page displays a list of news headlines aligned to their location in the site's link library. In the Java main category you will see nothing but Java news, and browsing .NET links will only show .NET news. These news links are dynamic, frequently updated, and often don't include links to the big PR press releases that some sites try to pass off as "news."

Kategorie Highlights
The above language categories are dedicated to the common mainstream suspects and some niche languages. You'll find the necessary sections for Java, Visual Basic, and C/C++, but you'll also find plenty of room for Delphi, Pascal, Basic, Perl, and PHP, as well as a new section for Python. Each category contains sections with source code, articles, and development tools relevant to that language, as well as some specific sections: Applets for Java, VBXs and OCXs for VB, and VCLs for Delphi/Kylix.

You will find that the site has categories for different platforms and operating systems such as Windows, Microsoft.NET, web development and UNIX (actually just Linux and BSD). They are structured in a similar way to the language sections described above. The System Utilities links previously found in the Windows and UNIX sections have disappeared, so they are purely listings of programming information.

There are several other categories, many of which were previously subcategories in the old hierarchical site layout. The Database and XML category provides links to development information for a wide range of mainstream database applications, including SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, PostgreSQL, and Interbase. Web development now has its own dedicated categories, broken down into lists of interesting links for the Microsoft (ASP/ASP.NET) and non-Microsoft world.

Where do they get all these wonderful toys from?
Most of the links were suggested by members of the site. While membership was available prior to the redesign, it wasn't as a prominent feature of the site as it is now. The ability to suggest content is just one of the benefits of the free membership system. You can also access community features like message boards and a customizable favorite links list.

Speaking of message boards, they seem to be very lively. Programmers' Heaven features dedicated panels for each language the site categorizes links to, as well as Job Postings, Game Programming, COM Development, Palm, Wireless, Windows, and UNIX. Most forums tend to be quite active, with numerous active threads and new posts daily. Site members can create their own message boards for discussion of topics not covered by the "official" message boards.

Today, more than ever, there seems to be a thriving community in developer heaven, along with more code and resources than you can reasonably expect to exhaust in your lifetime. If you enjoy browsing endless lists of articles about your favorite language, you might find yourself in heaven. At the very least, Developer's Paradise, with its well-organized lists of links, is a boon to those of us with wildly unorganized bookmark lists.
